  • USAF Veterans find fun jobs at Crowfield Golf Club

  • May 31 2025

Bobby Pickel, Michael Cramer and Jason Scaffidi share a special bond. They each retired after decorated careers in the United States Air Force. They each traveled the world while serving their country. And, today, they are co-workers at the City's Crowfield Golf Club.

Bobby Pickel was a USAF E8 Senior Master Sergeant when he retired after 26 years. The Virginia native calls joining the Air Force "the best decision I ever made."

After deciding to make the Lowcountry home, Bobby said the decision to join the Crowfield staff was an easy one. Today he is a cart attendant and starter at the club. "I wanted to stay active, and I love golf," he said. "This was an opportunity to work, meet people in the community, and also get free golf."

Bobby, who plays golf two to three times a week, averages 15,000 to 20,000 steps a day while on the job. "It gets super busy," he said. "There's never a dull moment."

Michael Cramer, who served for 24 years in the Air Force, started in September 2024 at Crowfield. The USAF E7 Master Sergeant actually served with Bobby Pickel while in the USAF, and says that Bobby encouraged him to work at Crowfield.

Like Bobby, Michael enjoys the fast pace of being a cart attendant and starter. "This job is all about being outside," he said. "It's very busy work, but it keeps you young. We have a good mixture of young and old ... it's just a good group to work with."

He also tries to play at least twice a week, calling the sport "all about the enjoyment and camaraderie.”

Jason Scaffidi was a C17 Loadmaster in the Air Force, and served for 21 years. He has been working at Crowfield for three years. "After the Air Force I wanted something that I was not responsible for people," he said.

Jason, who works mainly inside as a pro shop attendant, says he too loves to plays golf. "I definitely play when I can ... but with a 12-year-old and a 10-year-old, I don't get to do a whole lot outside of after-school sports with them,” he explained with a laugh.

Like his co-workers, Jason described an atmosphere at Crowfield that is about working hard, enjoying meeting new people, and having fun.

"The people are awesome," he said of the Crowfield staff and the golfers he interacts with every day. "It's been good."

We appreciate the visit with these outstanding employees, and salute them for their service to our country.
