City of Goose Creek Guidelines for Obtaining a Gas Meter from SCE & G

Section G2417 of the 2003 Edition of the International Residential Code requires all gas piping systems be tested before the meter is installed to confirm that there are no leaks in the system.

Before you can contact SCE&G to install a gas meter to your home, you must first have a gas pressure test inspection performed by the Building Inspection Department.

You may decide to do this yourself, or you may wish to hire a licensed plumbing contractor or heating and air conditioning contractor to do this for you.

The test consists of closing all gas outlets which are supplied by the main gas line in your home, then installing a pressure gauge on the outside pipe end at the meter location and pumping up the pressure to a minimum of nine pounds. This pressure must remain without dropping for at least 30 minutes.

The homeowner or contractor is required to obtain a gas pressure test permit from City Hall. The permit must be posted on the house and be visible from the street. After the gas line is pressurized, you or your contractor must call the inspection office at 863-5212 and request a gas pressure test inspection.

Our inspectors will visit the site to determine if the pressure on the gauge is sufficient. If the inspection is successful the inspector will call SCE&G to release the meter.

It is the homeowner’s responsibility to contact SCE&G and make payment arrangements before SCE&G will come out to install the meter. The City has no control over their schedule after we release the inspection.
