City of Goose Creek Inspection Guidelines for Re-Roofing a residential dwelling
Per City Ordinance, a permit is required for any roofing work performed by a homeowner or a contractor. The permit must be displayed and visible from the street.
Section 905.2 of the 2003 International Residential Code stipulates the requirements for the installation of composition asphalt shingles.
- Shingles cannot be installed on a roof slope less than 2 units vertical to 12 units horizontal.
- Underlayment is required per Section R905.2.3
- Fasteners shall be galvanized steel, stainless, aluminum or copper.
- Fastener length shall be a minimum of 12 gage and shall penetrate the roof decking a minimum of ¾".
- The number of fasteners required per shingle shall be per the manufacturer’s installation instructions for high wind zones.
Section R907 "Re-Roofing" states that new shingles cannot be installed over existing shingles where the existing roof has two or more applications of any type of roof covering.
Contractors and homeowners are required to remove all roofing debris from the building site.
No Re-Roofing Inspections are required by the City.
