Capt. Shawn Laffey began his career with the City of Goose Creek as a Reserve Police Officer in 1993. He served in this capacity until he was hired full time in 1995.
Capt. Laffey joined the United States Marine Corps after graduating high school, then returned to the Charleston area in 1991 as a manager for Parks Auto Parts. After graduating from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy, Capt. Laffey was quickly transferred to the traffic unit where he became a Field Training Officer, an instructor with seven certifications and a collision re-constructionist. Capt. Laffey was promoted to Corporal of the Traffic Unit in 2002, then to the Department's Training Supervisor as a Sergeant in 2005. He was promoted to Lieutenant and given command of the Patrol Division in March 2006. This position was reclassified to the rank of Captain in February, 2009.
As Patrol Division Commander, Capt. Laffey is responsible for three patrol teams that provide twenty-four hours of service in the City, a traffic team with two canine officers, and the department's vehicle fleet.
Capt. Laffey says his greatest sense of accomplishment comes when citizens thank him for helping them and for providing direction during a difficult time in their lives. "Knowing you make a positive impact in someone's life is one of the greatest rewards for your labor."
Capt. Laffey was the 2003 Goose Creek Police Department Employee of the Year. Capt. Laffey enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons when not at work.
