Earthquake Preparedness for Residents
- Pick "safe places" in each room of your home. Under a sturdy piece of furniture or against an interior wall away from windows and tall furniture.
- In each of the safe places practice drop, cover and hold on. That means drop under the selected table/desk, hold on to one of the legs and cover your eyes by holding your head down.
- Practice drop, cover and hold on at least twice a year.
- Inform guests, babysitters and caregivers of your plan. Everyone in your home should know what to do if an earthquake occurs.
- Get first aid training.
- Discuss earthquakes with your family
- Talk to your insurance agent. Make sure your home is insured in the event of an earthquake.
- Protect Your Property:
- Bolt bookcases, china cabinets and other tall furniture to wall studs.
- Brace or anchor high or top-heavy objects.
- Secure any items that might fall. (television, books, computer)
- Install strong latches or bolts on cabinets.
- Move large or heavy objects and fragile items to lower shelves.
- Store breakable items such as bottled foods, glass and china in low, closed cabinets with latches.
- Hang heavy items, such as pictures and mirrors away from beds couches or anywhere people sit.
- Brace overhead-light fixtures.
- Strap water heater to wall studs.
- Bolt down any gas appliances.
- Install flexible pipefittings to avoid gas or water leaks.
- Repair any deep cracks in ceilings or foundations.
- Check to see if your house is bolted to its foundation. Homes bolted to their foundations are less likely to be severely damaged during earthquakes.
