Harvey Becker, a native of Michigan, moved to Goose Creek thirty years ago.  He has spent virtually his entire law enforcement career with the Goose Creek Police Department.  Over the years he has worked through the ranks of the police department and was appointed Chief of Police in 1989.

"Since day one I knew that if I always took care of my employer, my employer would take care of me,” said Chief Becker.  “I knew if I did my job and did it consistently well, I would always have a place serving the community.”

As the Chief of Police, it is Harvey Becker’s duty to lead, staff and organize 65 commissioned officers and 26 civilian support personnel.  Under Chief Becker’s leadership, the police department has been awarded international accreditation from CALEA (Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc.), implemented mobile data terminals and in-car cameras in police vehicles, established a police substation and maintained one of the lowest crime rates in South Carolina.  Moreover, what is of key importance to Chief Becker is that the Goose Creek Police Department earns the trust and respect of the community day-in-and-day-out. 

"It is necessary to earn the support of the community by building trust-based relationships with those we serve.  We want our citizens to feel secure and believe in us,” said Chief Becker.  “Support from the community makes Goose Creek a safer place, and makes our job much easier.”

“The Goose Creek Police Department parallels the City’s growth,” said Chief Becker.  “We still provide the patrol services that are the backbone of our department but we are working to specialize our agency personnel to better meet the community’s needs and expectations.”  The police department delivers specialized services to include traffic, vice and narcotic enforcement, school resource,  K-9, special response, animal control, victim advocacy, polygraph examination and crime analysis.

Harvey Becker is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Academy.  He also holds a Bachelor’s of Science from Lake Superior State University.
