Mark Phillips was working for the Army Corps of Engineers in Minnesota when he had the opportunity to move to South Carolina in 1979 to work on a large project in St. Stephen. Born and raised on a farm in South Dakota and educated in a one room country school, Goose Creek appealed to him because it was close-knit community with some rural character. Goose Creek was close to all of Charleston’s amenities but removed enough to maintain its small-town atmosphere.
As new citizens of Goose Creek, Mark and his wife, Sue, became charter members of the newly formed Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Mark was a founding member of Helping Hands of Goose Creek, a local food pantry, working with them for over fifteen years. “When you come to a new place you meet people by getting involved”, said Mr. Phillips. “Through our involvement, Sue and I have developed a bond with the community”.
Originally, they came here with the idea of staying a few years and then moving on. But they quickly realized what a great city and region this was to live in so have put down roots. They raised both of our children in Goose Creek. Son, Aaron is now an Air Force pilot and daughter Amy is in fashion merchandising living and working in New York City. Goose Creek provided a wholesome environment and gave them both all that they needed to become successful adults.
Mark has served continuously on City Council since 1986. During his tenure he has seen a lot of changes including population growth, expanded city boundaries, new facilities, improved technology, upgraded infrastructure and development of a professional, well-equipped and efficient city staff. “It has been challenging and exciting to be involved with the pace that changes and improvements have occurred in the City during the past twenty-five years”.
The fifty year anniversary of the City has afforded an opportunity to reflect on how far the City has come since those very humble and challenging beginnings in 1961. “I am honored and humbled to have had the opportunity to be a part of the success story of Goose Creek. We all look forward to the challenges ahead as well”.
Mark Phillips holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from South Dakota State University and a Master of Business Administration from University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota.
