Army Sergeant First Class, John McCants moved to Goose Creek from Thailand in 1973. As South Carolina natives, John and his wife Christena found Goose Creek to be a quiet, neighborly community. This was an ideal place to raise their four children, Gerry, Robin, Mechelle and Artina.
After leaving the Army, Mr. McCants began his career with the City of Goose Creek as a Building and Fire Inspector. Mr. McCants eventually went to work for Charleston County helping with community development and writing grants to provide funding for low-income families to build and repair homes. In 1992, Mr. McCants decided to again offer his services to the City of Goose Creek by running for City Council.
“I saw a need to assist the City,” said Councilman McCants. “People are meant to serve each other and I wanted to give something back.”
During his 14 years on City Council, Mr. McCants has proudly supported the construction of the Marguerite H. Brown Municipal Center and has worked to set aside green space. He is also encouraging a restudy of traffic flow throughout the City limits.
“The reason my family moved to Goose Creek was the natural beauty and recreation available for children to enjoy,” said Mr. McCants. “I want to help maintain that image.”
To stay in touch with the people of Goose Creek, Councilman McCants is a member of the Goose Creek Concerned Citizen Organization. Each month the Organization meets with citizens to better understand their needs. In addition to his work with the City, Councilman McCants volunteers with the United Methodist Relief Agency. As a volunteer, Mr. McCants travels throughout the Tri-County area assessing houses that need repair and providing estimates of the repair costs. This is all part of Councilman McCants’ effort to help low- to moderate-income families obtain safe, decent, sanitary and affordable housing.
Mr. McCants works with the Charleston Area Senior Citizens as a Board Member of the Foster Grandparent Group. He also serves as a Board Member of the Berkeley-Dorchester Economic Development Board that works with Head Start, and he provides weatherization assistance to help low income families with utility bills.
"You could say that I have appointed myself as an information and referral bureau that low-income families can use to improve their quality of life,” said Councilman McCants.
As part of his professional and volunteer work, Mr. McCants attended Morris College and holds Associate Degrees in both Business Marketing and Public Service from Trident Technical Community College.
